This painting reflects the profound experience of grief and the unsteady, fragile process of moving forward after the death of my mother. It is a self-portrait set against a backdrop of disarray, a visual metaphor for the emotional chaos of loss. In creating this piece, I confronted not only the raw pain of absence but also the challenge of embracing vulnerability as an artist. The oil paints used were found among my mother’s things after her death, which were unused. When my mother passed, I realised to make art that genuinely connects with other people, I have to be willing to lay bare my own fragility. This painting is part of that process.
