Stinging nettles are a ubiquitous plant, found almost anywhere. Not the most popular plant with humans, its defence mechanism is well known to walkers and gardeners. But this plant is a crucial food plant for the caterpillars of various butterfly species: Red Admiral, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell and Comma feed on its essential nutrients and enjoy protection from predators, unaffected by the nettle's stinging hairs.

Fens are mysterious places, peatlands with acidic soil, but also fed by natural springs. Reeds, rushes and sedges abound, but rare orchids can also be found, and beautiful carnivorous plants such as butterwort, bladderwort and sundew that have adapted to the acidic soils by ingesting insects. They are important habitats for plants, insects and birds. They also function as a carbon sink, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change. Sleeping fen describes this habitat in winter light.
