Statement
My artistic practice is a vibrant journey, continuously exploring color and composition, rooted in intuition and spontaneity. I embrace a non-objective approach, allowing my subconscious to guide me, resulting in a loose and uninhibited creative process. Each painting begins with a free flow of marks and movements across the canvas, an exhilarating dance of spontaneity. From there, I delve deeper, honing in on specific details that resonate with me. I explore the silence within the evolving composition, manipulating space through color and shape, letting intuition take the lead rather than adhering to a predetermined plan.
I find inspiration in the ever-changing rhythms of nature during my walks through the mountains and forests that surround me. The cosmic events in the night sky throughout the year also spark my imagination, drawing connections between these two realms. These reflections influence my sense of being and existence, particularly as an adopted individual grappling with the myriad emotions, questions, and fears that accompany such a journey. The vastness of the universe always fascinates me, igniting a sense of wonder about our place within it as a human race.
In my work, abstract representations emerge, not as literal maps, but as subconscious creations that encapsulate my experiences and reflections. Through painting, I strive to convey the intricate tapestry of emotions and thoughts that define my relationship with nature, the cosmos, and my own identity.
Biography
I’m an Irish visual artist based in County Wicklow, and my work is driven by colour, memory, nature, and a lifelong fascination with the cosmos. I was born in Nenagh, County Tipperary, and later moved to County Clare before graduating from the Limerick School of Art and Design in 1996. In the early stages of my career, I had to balance the realities of life with my dedication to painting, but today I work full-time from my studio, creating immersive, colour-focused abstractions that carry emotional depth and a strong sense of place.
The landscapes around me, including Wicklow’s mountains, forests, and changing skies have always been a major source of inspiration. So too has the vastness of the universe, which often gives me a sense of perspective on human identity and existence. My experience of being adopted has also shaped how I explore themes of belonging, memory, and the tension between the intimate and the infinite.
Over the years, my work has been recognised in both national and international settings. I was selected for the Art Riddler Exhibition and received First Prize at Climate Action for All – Climeaction in Cork City, which acknowledged my interest in socially and environmentally responsive art. In 2025, I exhibited in several major shows, including Cairde Visual, Kilkenny Arts Festival, and Art Riddler, helping to cement my place within contemporary Irish painting.
I’ve held a number of solo exhibitions, most recently Wanderings (2023) at The Seamus Ennis Arts Centre’s Easter Snow Gallery. Aosdána member Eamon Colman opened the exhibition and wrote an accompanying essay on my work. I’ve also been awarded residencies at Cill Rialaig in both 2007 and 2022.
Across everything I make, I’m continually exploring how nature, colour, and human experience intersect. My aim is to create work that invites viewers to reflect on their own place within the small, personal landscapes of their lives and the immeasurable expanse that surrounds us all.
