this feeling is on me, this place is in me takes its title from the Irish expression “this feeling is on me, not in me” and from Seamus Heaney’s line “me in place and the place in me.” The painting explores how emotion and place are experienced as something that settles on the body through time; layered, weathered, and cumulative. Built through repeated actions of marking, staining, and abrasion, the surface holds traces of movement and contact, where colour gathers and disperses like memory itself. Rather than depicting a specific site, the work absorbs place through rhythm, density, and residue. Wicklow is present not as landscape, but as something internalised and carried through language, sensation, and the physical act of painting.
